5’ish years ago we cut down an Ashe (EAB; Iowa; ~10” diameter) in this landscaping ring. We had it stump ground it down and today we were trying to get a smaller decorative tree placed in the SAME SPOT - we know this ain’t the best idea, but we also thought 5 years of decomposition would have had the Ashe addressed enough to plant… but guess not, it’s as hard as it was when it was alive and only 6” below grade.

What are our options? The ring looks silly from a visual standpoint… debating on ripping it all out and going grass seed unless someone here with more knowledge can give me a solution.
