Repot and initial work on Dwarf Alberta Spruce.

Last pic is last years attempt, it survived winter but does not look great so fingers crossed. It is budding and putting on new growth.

I took it out of the 1 gallon nursery pot and of course it was pot bound like every other, but as I worked at the top soil I realized that the root mass was hard set at an angle so I changed my plans of doing an upright.

The roots were growing and the tree was putting on plenty of buds/new growth so figured now was as good as any time to repot. Everything went smoothly other than trying to unwind the swirling mass of roots.

After doing what I could initially I got the roots for the most part to cooperate. Got it potted at the natural angle of the roots. Potted using a airy blend of Compost/pine bark/akadame/perlite and Laca. Sprinkled in some very light fertilizer and other micronutrients/beneficial bacteria/fungi.

After watering in and rest I removed dead/dying branches and maybe 30% of the foliage.

i will do very initial guy wire training for the natural apex trunk to further add visual interest to the tree over time.

The new JM’s I picked up.

Not Bonsai but figured yall would appreciate the movement and progress of these container trees long term.

Mikawa Yatsubusa and Tamukeyama I just picked up.

Western Pennsylvania USA zone 6b.

Went to local landscaping and small level nursery on Monday and saw this Mikawa Yatsubusa still wrapped on a pallet with a few other cultivars that had been dropped off an hour or 2 prior on a truck from Oregon. I had to have it! Since it had all ready pushed new growth I protected it the last 2 night due to 22f-25f temps. Only plans are to check the roots and get as much of my soil mix around the rootball as I can without disturbing it too much.

The Tamukeyama was on discount at a big box store and has just started breaking bud so I’ll just move it out of the cheap nursery pot into something better looking and add some of my own soil.

Obviously going to cut back any dieback from winter and very lightly prune. No big decisions will be made till fall/winter and beyond.

This is my first post in the sub so if anybody has any pointers I am open. Dog pic for reasons.
