I’m new here so I apologize if this has been answered before but Vera’s mother claims they are “scientists who don’t believe in god”. Why did she have an alter with her daughter’s photo that they were offering food and were bowing with incense? Is that not the same thing?

Seems like a small part of character development and maybe I don’t know enough about eastern religions. Just odd to me they had both scenes within minutes of each other. Unless it’s relevant in later episodes?
