Little or no charge at idle with new Alternator
I purchased a 1986 Chrysler fifth Avenue 140amp alternator (from power bastards) for my car (same model) and I’ve really been struggling. I’m having an issue where at factory idle RPM (630-775) the alternator doesn’t produce enough voltage. It only begins barley charging at 850-900rpm where the battery level goes to 13.2V
Note: I have done the “big 3” upgrade
I’ve checked:
-the voltage regulator
-Possible resistance in the wire going to the battery
-The grounds
-pulley sizes
Everything checks out except the pulley sizes
The alternator pulley that came with my order measures 68.28MM, meanwhile my stock crankshaft pulley is 187MM giving me a ratio of 2.74.
Will switching the alternator pulley to a 62mm pulley do the job? Could it destroy the alternator? Is there any diagnostic tips or tricks you guys recommend or is the pulley the only issue? Is 850rpm the correct “idle” now since it’s a high output alternator
Important note: I’ve been trying to keep most of the car to follow factory specs, with the exception of new AC system and aftermarket sound system. So no “performance” level factory underdrive pulleys etc.
