13000 notes - 10k Tags - cleaned up over six months

At the end of last year, I imported all of my browser bookmarks, Evernote, Pocket and Diigo exports into Obsidian. It took multiple rounds of tags cleanup strategies but it now in a very useable state. Still a lot of work to do but i wouldn't have come this far without Notebook Navigator.

If anyone care about the process, here are some strategies that helped me a lot:

  • Remove 'subjective' tags
    • how_to...
    • best_of...
    • highest_..
    • top_x...
  • Remove / simplify long tags
    • cyberpunk_high_res_graphics_guide -> cyberpunk_2077
  • Combine related tags into a simple category
    • cyberpunk_game
    • cyberpunkgame
    • cyberpunk_the_game
  • Remove redundant tags
    • Keep only 3 to 5 tags per note
      • Tag for what the note is: music_video, ted_talk
      • Tag for what the note is about: author, topic
    • Keep 1 broad and one narrow tag
      • gaming, skyrim
      • 3d_modeling, zbrush
    • Use Dataview to query list of notes with more than 5 tags
  • Remove tags that appear only once
    • Except tags about authors names
  • Move notes to tags in bulk
    • In Notebook Navigator, search for 'graph data !#graph_data' and drag to tag 'graph_data'
    • Start with top tags for better aggregation
  • Long tail - add tags to notes without tags
    • In Notebook Navigator, search for: '!# '
