My sister is 13 and really struggles to read. She's started a few books, like "The Hunger Games" and "The Black Phone", but she struggled to comprehend them and eventually gave up. My parents make fun of her for this and whenever my sister tries reading, my mom teases her for reading slow or not knowing a lot of the vocabulary. Notably, she also had a long-term sub for all of kindergarten and then covid hit the next year, so it's really not her fault. It would be one thing if she simply doesn't like to read like she claims, but occasionally I find her trying to read "The Black Phone" again or carrying it with her.
The point is, recently I've been able to get her to read to me out loud a bit. It gives her the chance to read and me the chance to explain tough vocabulary to her. However, I want to find something for her to read that's in her reading level while still interesting her. My first suggestion would be Percy Jackson, however I went through a PJO phase as a kid and drove her a bit nuts, so that's not an option. Here's a list of other media she's interested in.
- Stranger Things
- The Black Phone
- It (The newer ones)
- Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun (I know that there's a manga series, but I want to try and find something she can read out loud, because if we do it together, she's more likely to want to.)
- Melanie Martinez
- Stand By Me
