Suggest me a gritty fiction book that will hook me and leave me devastated
I've spent most of my life reading mostly Fantasy and Sci-Fi, with some horror/thrillers here and there, but I recently took a detour and read Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr and absolutely loved it. The book was intense and raw, and it occupied my thoughts whenever I wasn't reading and after finishing it.
I'm looking for my next read outside of my usual genres, and am looking for a fiction book that's grounded in reality (no magic or scifi elements), that's unputdownable and gritty, dark or deeply affecting. I'm open to pretty much anything that fits these criterias.
What should I pick up next?
