How can OEMs plan future models and production without fully understanding the impact of tariffs on their business?
I work for an OEM and have been told by our leadership over the past 12 months that we have had an impact of 12 billion dollars on our business, only to then be told that the impact is only 3 billion, with a follow-up statement that we truly don't know the impact. This was a loss that was not anticipated at the beginning of 2025.
Our company was fully compliant with USMCA, which was supposed to be a good thing. All of a sudden, that does not matter due to tariff impact.
Congress must regulate the impact that an administration can have on the industry. No administration should have the power to guide the industry down a particular path, like EV, or have the power to scrap all of those plans if they disagree with it. The industry cannot pivot on 4 year cycles
A bipartisan committee must be established with realistic and attainable timelines and plans regarding industry direction. Otherwise, OEMs will continue to lose money on scrapped development and plans that were forced on them in the first place and the American consumer will pay the price.
