Is there a free/no BS website to search VIN # to see how long a new car has been on dealer lot?

If a new car comes with a 3 year warranty (Subaru), why buy the extended warranty at time of purchase? Would it be more wise to purchase one closer to the 3 year mark? Is it really prohibitively more expensive if I wait?
