when two or more players end up with the same amount of votes, how does the system decide who gets which place?

sometimes i notice that e.g. the third place received the same amount of stars in a round as me (in this example 4th place), resulting in me not getting podium, being rewarded less cash etc.

i don't really care about that at all, i was just wondering how the placement is actually decided in those cases. is it random? does anyone know?
