Hello! 22F, very recently diagnosed with homozygous haemochromatosis - currently 5 months pregnant, and I was diagnosed after my first round of bloods in the pregnancy. I am just wondering for any others who are pregnant/have had children with HH, did it cause you any problems in your pregnancy? I’m not taking any iron containing supplements and most recent bloods showed my iron levels are still good, a bit on the higher side but there has been a decrease since the beginning of the pregnancy. I honestly thought it would be ideal considering there are so many people out there who struggle with iron deficiency during pregnancy. However, my OBs seem very concerned about how this may impact myself and the baby, including telling me numerous times that they’re worried I am a high risk for pre-eclampsia as a result of HH. I’ve asked for clarification but I’m beginning to think they’re not actually sure what HH does… So, for those of you who’ve had children, were there any complications caused by the haemochromatosis itself? I was under the impression that I didn’t need to worry so much since I am already a lacto-vegetarian and of course, baby will take a whole heap of iron as they grow and it’s more for after birth that I’ll need to continue to monitor my bloods and potentially begin venesection. Or have I totally misread the situation?
