I'm currently working on some text designs in Illustrator for my plotter, and I'm hitting a wall. The problem is, my plotter keeps tracing the outlines of the letters instead of following the center stroke.
I know about "single-line" or "stick" fonts, but they don't really work for what I'm trying to do. I’m using a brush tip, and I'm really trying to get that calligraphic, thick-to-thin look. But whenever I feed it standard fonts, it just tries to draw the perimeter of the letters, which looks awful with a brush.
Is there a way to get true calligraphic strokes on a plotter? How are you guys pulling off variable line weights? Is there some trick to turning paths into centerlines while keeping the pressure/thickness variation, or is there a specific software workflow I'm missing?
