My husband passed the day after our youngest son turned 16. He will begin receiving benefits as he is a minor child. (Our older children are over 19 years old and not eligible for benefits.) To my understanding, this benefit is to be used for his care.

Do I need to keep track of what the benefits are used for? Is there a list of qualifying expenses somewhere so that I know I am using the funds appropriately? If there is money left over, can I put it in a savings account or 529 plan for when he’s an adult? I’ve received conflicting info about this. Considering how long I had to wait to get an appt to apply for his benefit, I’m not sure I’d be able to speak to a SSA employee. I know they’re overworked, so I’m trying to figure this out using other resources.

No one else in my family is receiving benefits, aside from the one-time death benefit I received. My son is not disabled. He will be eligible for payments until he graduates from high school in just over 2 years.

Thank you!
