Geoff Johns' run feels like fanfiction?

So to prefice the Geoff Johns' Aquaman run is the only full run I've read of the character, and I absolutely love it. It's by far my favourite run of the New 52. But I'm interested if people who HAVE read a lot more Aquaman feel like his run feels like fanfiction?
As usually, and especially around this time with his Justice League run, I feel like Johns' runs kind of feel like fanfiction where he makes it so his favourite characters are super cool. This may also be partly due to Justice League having a lot more relationship focus and I personally already have a strong interpretation of how each member views and would interact with every other member.

So all in all I'm interested to see if other people feel like this is also applicable to his Aquaman run. Also I want some older (80s-90s) comics for the big DC characters (Perez' wonder woman, most of the new DC Finest: Batman, Death of Superman compendium, etc.), so would you guys recommend the Peter David omni or sth else?

So back around 2019 a few of my friends got me into anime, I started with the (at the time) 2010s starters like SAO, MHA, etc. But also pretty quickly started watching some classics like Evangelion and Trigun which I sometimes loved even more.

I remember watching this 80s series, I think it was pretty short with like 3 seasons of probably less than 12 eps per season. The first two seasons we're pretty generic adventure fantasy about two knights finding this slave boy in some village, he turns out being the son of the now deceased emperor (or king? some kind of monarch).
He was then trained to also be a knight, but I remember it only really being a plotpoint he was the heir again during season 3, so maybe they had to keep it secret for some reason?

I most distinctly remember two parts of season 3:

A scene where two generals were playing something like shogi or go, in my head it was like on continous take for a few minutes but that might just be my memory. In the end one of the generals just straight up shot the other, and then when he turned the lights on he suddenly was surrounded by a bunch of assasins who jumped him.

Second is what I believe to be the ending of the series. The prince had finally become king/emperor/whatever and for some reason (I remember it being very well written but don't quite recollect why) he ordered for the entire kingdom to be nuked.
The last thing I know was him standing in a wasteland after the bombing and pissing in a jar(?) and then drinking it. I assume this was some philosophical statement but I can't remember why.

If anyone has any clue let me know, I kind of want to rewatch it but I just don't know the name anymore, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
