I’ve been noticing something a lot these days. Whenever someone gets caught cheating — whether it’s sexting, chatting sexually with someone else, or even physically being with another person — they immediately start saying things like:

“It was a mistake.” “I was confused.” “Please give me one more chance.”

This confuses me.

Cheating isn’t something that happens in one second like accidentally dropping a glass. It usually involves multiple steps — talking, flirting, hiding things, continuing conversations, sometimes even meeting the person. So it’s not like they didn’t know what they were doing from the beginning.

If someone is fully aware of their actions while doing it, why do they suddenly say they were “confused” after getting caught?

Is it guilt? Fear of losing the relationship? Regret only because they got caught? Or do people actually realize their mistake only after the damage is done?

I’m genuinely trying to understand the psychology behind this. Would like to hear different perspectives.

I genuinely don’t understand something about relationships.

If you’re no longer happy with your partner, why not just break up and move on? Why cheat and give someone lifetime trauma instead?

What confuses me even more is when someone already has a loving, caring, understanding partner but still goes searching outside the relationship. If everything is already there, what exactly are they looking for?

And another thing I’ve noticed a lot: many times people cheat with someone who doesn’t even seem like a better match emotionally or personally. It makes the whole situation feel even harder to understand.

Is cheating about missing something in the relationship? Ego? Attention? Excitement? Fear of being alone? Or something else completely?

I’m honestly trying to understand the psychology behind this, because from my perspective it feels like breaking up first would be the more respectful and mature choice for everyone involved.

Curious to hear your thoughts.
