Group Ride thru Downtown Saturday Afternoon

Message for the group that was riding through downtown at about 1 PM on Sat, May 9. If you're organizing rides for dozens of riders, please remember:

  • Lights/Intersections: You can't block a light through five cycles to let the entire group through. It’s illegal and it makes drivers resent cyclists in the city. If the light turns red, the group stops and regroups back into clusters for safety and easier ride management.
  • Safety Gear: There were way too many people without helmets, lights, or reflective clothing. If you’re going to lead a public ride, you have to set a standard for safety so people actually stay safe enough to keep riding.

I'm an avid rider myself and have been in plenty of large group rides, but today looked incredibly disorganized. We have a hard enough time sharing the road; let’s not make it harder by acting like we own the road.
