With train travel I now prefer e-tickets to paper tickets. E-tickets are never gobbled up at the gates, meaning you can keep them as a souvenir of your travel. Admittedly some paper tickets are from a paper roll and have a QR code, so wont be gobbled up, but can crease or fold. Either type of paper ticket can eventually fade.

With bus travel I prefer paper tickets for day tickets rather than tap on tap off. If I am just making a single journey home from a supermarket for example I don't mind using my debit card and making do without a paper ticket. However, when out for a day I do prefer a paper daysaver. I consider my debit card and my phone basically private and do not want to have to use either multiple times a day for permission to travel. For this reason I hate the invention of tap on tap off.

Admittedly I may have to use my phone to enter and exit the station, and to show my e-ticket to the inspector. However, this is limited and a happy limit to how often I feel it reasonable to use my phone to assist with proof of payment for travel.
