idk if this has been mentioned before but I think that MIY used to be a priest/pastor that turned to evil or witchcraft or at least disguised himself as one when he came to the original townsfolk. He probably tried to convince them to sacrifice their children just like in the story of Abraham and told them it was an act to prove their obedience to God and promised them that in return they would be saved/receive eternal life. That’s why Sophia is able to show off as deeply religious and quotes stories from the Bible a lot (including the binding of Isaac).
