Hey folks.. have a potentially large decision to make about what direction to go job-wise. I have an opportunity to get promoted at this envionmental NGO to a project manager, making $60k with benefits. Its a temporary position though, with only 7 months of work (so I'd expect to make $35k before taxes). On the other hand, before this opportunity popped up I was thinking about going for commerical fishing instead. I have a good opportunity lined up on a fishing boat in Bristol Bay. There is no guarantee but if we get a good catch and there is a good market price I will make 10 to 25K. Most likely around 15 I believe. Then I could still come back to my current position at the NGO and continue building experiences. The project manager position I think would look really good on a resume, but I believe it would be pretty stressful at times and so I'm not sure if the compensation really makes it worth it. I know fishing will be hard, but in theory I will be getting better compensated.
I most likely would only want to do fishing for a 3 summers, just to kind of build up a pile of savings.
Some other info/context: I am 28 y.o., single, and have a biology degree with tons of experience working outdoors. Thinking about trying to build myself up financially via fishing and then maybe return to conservation down the line. Or pivot into something else.. but I don't see fishing working long term just because I know it is a lot on the body.
Let me know your advice Reddit, what would you do if you were me?
