For context, I’m a 17-year-old film student in college. However, after hearing about video art, I became excited and decided to pursue that instead. I feel like art has always been a part of me, but film literally saved me from the darkest period of my life. I love everything about a film, except for one thing: I can’t see myself being in the film industry. I hate everything about it. That’s why when I found video art, I felt like I had finally found my perfect medium. For me, it’s the best of both worlds (from my understanding of video art). I can make my films and still be in the art world where I feel like I belong. However, there’s one thing I’m struggling with: researching the medium. Before I just say “fuck it” and do whatever I want and make my art, I wanted to make sure there aren’t any concrete standards I would have to abide by. I want to make fine art. Please give me some recommendations for pieces to study.
