I’ve been thinking of adopting a second cat to keep my cat company. I live with my mom, we have a 4-year old cat (Charlie) who is bored and lonely when I’m not around. Every time I come home he runs after me and won’t leave my side.
My mom adores him but unfortunately isn’t as invested as me in taking care of him and playing with him.
The thing is, I’m planning to move abroad in a year to do a master’s. And leaving Charlie is obviously on my mind. So I’ve been thinking through different options and was wondering if anyone here has advice:
taking Charlie with me - that won’t be straightforward given where I’m from (might be extra requirements), plus I’d have to find a place that allows pets. Note that Charlie has never traveled by plane so I’m also worried the trip might be scary for him
adopting a second cat - I’ve been wanting to for a while but my mom wasn’t open to it until now. We both know that getting Charlie a sibling would most probably make him happier and less lonely. While I’m still here I would make sure the introductions go smoothly and that they get along. My assumption is, once I leave, Charlie (and the other cat) will be okay without me, they would keep each other company, and my mom would take care of the basics, with the occasional cuddles.
Does this assumption make sense or will I be risking leaving two miserable cats behind? Any advice/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
