One Year BSW

For anyone that has take this program in Orillia. I was wondering your experience with gaining work after placement? I’m doing it in my hometown (Ottawa) so I’m wondering how successful you are with employment after you finish your placement

Does anyone have insight into the Indigenous social work field and how large the sector is in terms of job opportunities?

I’m really interested in working from a more holistic, culturally grounded approach and would love to do a BSW placement at an Indigenous health centre that offers a mix of case management and trauma-informed counselling. At the same time, I’m trying to think strategically about my training and don’t want to limit myself when I could also complete my placement in a more structured, intensive case management setting that is widely recognized across the broader social work system.

My main question is: how extensive is the Indigenous social work sector in terms of available roles, especially in cities like Toronto or Ottawa?

And if anyone has experience in this area, I’d also really appreciate hearing how the approach to social work in Indigenous-led settings differs from mainstream social work practice.

I’m looking for good placements for my BSW in Ottawa that will allow me to gain clinical skills. I would like to gain any mental health, case management skills to build a good foundation.

I’d love to know which organizations are a good starting point.

Does anyone have experience doing a placement or working at CMHA? What kind of learning experience does it offer? Is the work more clinical and hands-on, or more general support?

This would be my first experience in the social work field, and I’m still exploring my direction. I’m interested in working with neurodivergent youth in a therapeutic setting in the long term, but for now, I’m looking for an organization where I can build strong foundational skills and grow. Would CMHA be a good place for that? Also, do placements there typically lead to job opportunities afterward?
