▲ 3 r/SWORDS

My grandpa bought this sword at auction in North Carolina a few decades ago, and unfortunately he's since passed and no one in my family knows much about it. It was manufactured by Ames, is dated 1859, and has a JH inspector mark on it. I understand there were 5000 swords in the 1859 contract, about 3600 of which were marked 1859 and the remaining 1400 or so were marked 1860. It's further my understanding that 1200 of the 5000 swords sent to Virginia, and all or nearly all of those would've been marked 1860. Does anyone know where the 1859 marked swords would have shipped to? If this is a Virginia sword, would it be marked with a star stamp?

I have the option to pick up a 1993 M1A / all major components are USGI with a 20 round magazine for $1500. I see I can get new production rifles for a couple hundred less, but I'd prefer something with more historical value. I've also heard new production is more likely to have problems. I live in VA and don't want to run the risk of trying to finangle a warranty with our new laws. In your guys' opinion is this a fair deal?
