I have intolerance of black pepper and other spices. I get a sore throat, burning ears, burning mouth, crawling itching, nasal congestion, and then I developed sinusitis.

My black pepper allergy blood test came back high 8.6mg/ml about 3 weeks ago.

I saw an allergist today. Skin test was negative for foods including black pepper. The allergist is repeating food allergy blood tests. In addition, he ordered blood tests to rule out MCAS.

The allergist prescribed an Epipen, Allegra, and Pepcid.

I feel so frustrated. 😭😭😭

Hi,

I have burning ear pain, sore throat, and tingling in mouth since 2020. My doctor and I thought it was gastritis or neurological. I was put on antiseizure medication. Nothing worked so I stayed away from spicy food. We couldn't find any answers to my burning pain. I grew up eating Mexican food.

I ate some chicken with black pepper on Easter. I felt my tongue, mouth, lips, and ears burning and tingling instantly. I felt crawling itching on all my body. I flushed but no hives. No nausea. No diarrhea. I started feeling mild chest heaviness and dizzy. No shortness of breath. Blood pressure was really high.

I went to the doctor's office and she told me that I could be allergic to black pepper. She did a blood test. Black pepper allergen came back 6.8mg/ml.

The doctor gave me steroids, pepcid, and claritin. The ear pain was excruciating. I asked for an Epipen but she said that it was not needed.

I seeing an allergist next week. I suspect that I may be allergic to other spices.

  1. Did you have any mild to moderate symptoms that turned anaphylactic?

  2. Should I have been given an Epipen? I am really scared.
