I’ve recently subscribed to Honor Club and have been watching ROH from the beginning for the first time and the Briscoes have been a major highlight of the promotion for the first few months. I’m also a fan of Mark Briscoe’s current work in AEW. And while I don’t usually care about how good or bad a person any given wrestler is (almost anything before the 2000’s would be unwatchable if I did) something about the Briscoes makes me care. And Jay’s comments make me deeply uncomfortable when I think about them.
I understand the environment the Briscoes grew up in, they lived in Delaware Maryland, which is a twenty-minute drive away at most from where I live and have grown up. And this place is very Christian and homophonic in all the bad ways you imagine. You literally can’t go three minutes without seeing some kind of church. So I completely understand the environment in which they grew up in. But that doesn't excuse the disgusting things that Jay Briscoe publicly said.
After the Senate here legalized gay marriage, Jay Briscoe tweeted: “The Delaware Senate passed a bill yesterday that allows same sex couples to get married. If that makes you happy, then congratulations!!!!!!" which he them followed by tweeting "try and teach my kids that there's nothing wrong with that and I'll fucking shoot you"
That, is fucking disgusting, and anyone who thinks like that is a horrible person, end of story.
And I want to end this here and just say that Jay & Mark Briscoe are terrible people and that I have no sympathy for what happened to Jay. But I can’t, because time and time again they apologized, and it seemed genuine. They admitted to it like men and moved on with their lives.
The pessimistic side of me wants to say that they only apologized so they could sell more merchandise and get on TV. But, the more optimistic side of me is trying to convince me that they’re telling the truth, and that they feel remorse for the shit they’ve said publicly (and more likely privately) about the gay community.
The fact that they didn't get on AEW TV before Jay’s death because of what they had said makes me think that it’s possible that they’re full of shit and kept saying hateful things outside of the public eye and never truly changed. But I don't want to believe that two people who seemed so genuinely apologetic lied to the fans of their work just to make a few extra bucks.
I don’t know how to end this, sorry if this was an unorganized mess but I needed to rant.
I didn't watch Swerve VS Danielson as it happened, I was on a wrestling hiatus at the time and was super burnt out on everything. But Danielson is literally my favorite wrestler, and this is my favorite match (even though I didn't watch it until the beginning of this year), and I’m still pissed at myself for not watching it as it happened.
