So a friend who is VERY into baseball has almost persuaded me to follow MLB. I'll probably back the Pirates because I'm a little obsessed with pirates generally, and I'm a Penguins fan in the NHL so I might as well go for two Pittsburgh teams.

So enlighten me: what does an Australian who knows nothing about baseball, let alone the specifics of MLB, need to know about the Pittsburgh Pirates?

I'm posting here rather than in the pirates sub because I want to hear from fans of other teams as well - I want "warts and all" opinions! I want to know the good, bag, ugly, and just plain weird.
