Question for med-sized domestic pile

Hello. I have a pile that's roughly in the 1yd range. While turning my pile, it occurred to me... What if immediately after turning, I used a pipe with like a 1/2" diameter to bore multiple vertical holes deep into the pile, say like 10-20, and then maybe even 3-4 horizontal ones along the bottom (if possible). I try to turn 2-3 times a week, usually do.

Do you think this would significantly improve airflow for hot composting? Enough to drastically reduce the frequency of turning?

I'm going to try it either way, I'm just curious if anyone else has tried perforating their piles, and general thoughts on this idea.

Maybe it's a standard practice and i just don't know any better. Going into my third composting season.

Thanks for any contributions,

JS

Yeah so normally i do my tomatoes in a bed, but because of some things we're wanting to try this year, we may want to save bed space for other plants.

We are growing mostly (all?) indeterminants; Cherokee, Marzano, Prince, Krim, and Cherry varieties. I believe the cherries are also indeterminant but might be mistaken on that.

2-3 gallon and some 5 gallon planter bags are what I have for them. The marzanos might still get a spot in the beds to help ensure adequate watering.

Just looking for some general thoughts and recommendations for doing them in planters.

Thanks

JS
