I've been reading War and Peace recently and found that I have so many questions about small details! For example, Nikolai Rostov loses money at cards to Dolokhov - what are they playing? It seems like a very simple game. Just after that, Rostov leaves to meet his regiment in Poland - how does he do that? Is he just riding a horse by himself? Would his calvary horse come with him to Moscow? It feels like every few pages I have more questions about the things being described.
Is there a book that describes those things? Maybe even just something about life of the Russian nobility at the time?
The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation has end notes to describe historical or cultural references that aren't obvious. I'm thinking about things that aren't covered by those notes.
