Hi, I’m trying to find a book (or short story, I really can’t remember) of this crime thriller story my friend recently remembered reading a while back
One of the first, if not the first, chapters of the book shows an old cop driving his police car. He goes to a house he’s investigating, and while doing so, he sees something in the house through a window and dies of a heart attack (caused by a mixture of his unhealthy diet and shock of seeing whatever he saw) before getting back to his car to call for backup
This character shows up for just this chapter, all my friend and I remember about the MC is that he’s male, preteen or a teen, and was abducted
We also get a POV of the abductor who turns out is also a killer. I remember something about there being a railroad and/or a forest in the later chapters of the story (I think in one of the MC’s POV chapters?) while the MC is trying to escape the abductor, but that’s all I can recall for now
