I’ve lived in a wonderful little apartment near a park in a nice part of my city for quite some time now without issue, until the new neighbor moved in downstairs and problems began almost immediately.

My footsteps, which were never a problem for former neighbors, suddenly began being responded to by loud bangings of a broom against their ceiling. I couldn’t walk from the bedroom to couch without them banging on the ceiling with a broom.

Then, I have a ritual of every morning saying “good morning” to my sweet little corgi. I’ve been doing this since she was a puppy, and she doesn’t understand if I don’t greet her in the morning. Since downstairs neighbor moved in, every time I say good morning to my dog, she flys off in expletive laden tirades, screaming so loud I can hear her through the floor. It terrifies my dog and makes me feel unsafe.

Now, she’s begun have loud, in-depth conversations with herself at two am, chatting and laughing when it’s clearly obvious there’s no one else in her apartment. Loud enough that it wakes me up through the ceiling.

Normally at this point I would leave a note or attempt to talk to the neighbor directly, but all of this points to something seriously wrong with this person and I’m afraid that any step I take to correct the measure will result in an unsafe living situation for me. I’ve reached out to my landlord multiple times with no response.

Any advice on what to do next? I’m thinking of getting the police involved if my landlord won’t respond and I keep getting woken up in the middle of the night.
