TL;DR countertop guys drilled a center hole in our new slab when we ordered a 3 hole bridge faucet and the GC knew that. Slab is likely unsalvageable. Is it my fault for not telling them otherwise or is the GC on the hook for this?
Long version:
We're currently renovating our 1911 home with a full kitchen remodel. We're working through a general contractor that is well reviewed and so far has been great to work with. We had cabinets installed this week and countertops templated and fabricated according to plan.
Today, the countertop installers came with the finished slab - I let them get to work and went in the other room until they were done, which was about 2 hours. When I came out to look at the finished product, they had drilled a center hole behind the sink. We specifically ordered a very expensive, unlaquered brass bridge faucet that would need 3 holes off center to fit and this center hole was never requested by us. The general contractor was aware of this faucet choice and had seen the faucet in person as we ordered it before we even started demo. I asked the countertop guy why he drilled the hole and he said that it came that way from the fabricator. My wife happened to walk in the room earlier to take a work-in-progress picture that shows that the slab came solid and this guy just decided to drill a hole through our brand new quartz slab without asking us to see the faucet and then he lied to us about it when confronted.
Now the question is - do we go after the GC for this and get him to order a replacement slab? Is it up to the installers to correct this? Is there any way to salvage the existing slab that doesn't compromise the countertop? The installer suggested we just get a different faucet but that's unacceptable to me given that was our design choice and we already spent the money to buy it, plus it cannot be returned as we ordered it months ago.
The GC said he's going to talk to the fabricator and installer but I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I feel dumb for not checking on them while they were working but I also feel like it's not my responsibility to check their work, it's between them and the GC to make it right. Anyone experienced similar? How should we proceed?
