We recently bought a home and I’m just now noticing the damage to this tree.

Sorry for my ignorance on the topic, but can anyone identify the cause of this damage from the pictures? Based off googling I’m assuming some sort of insect ate it and now it’s rotting. I’m worried if it’s rotted out and snaps near the base it could damage my fence. Curious if this is something savable or if I should look at removing it.
