So far I'll add some watercolour with a wet brush and then take a dry fan brush to get the fur look. But it doesn't feel like it gives predictable results... Is that just practice or should I be trying another method?

Any advice on what to do to the horse to improve it? (not drawn by me)

The apple was my first try at a value study (followed a tutorial). The mountain-effect one didn't come out as nice as the tutorial though. My current paper isn't great so it gets that 'overworked' look really fast... Ordered new paper that will hopefully be a bit better. I'm struggling with shadows and knowing where to put them. Any suggestions as to how I could improve the mountain range?
