Good practices for battery powered circuits.

Newbie here, are there some good practices in designing a battery powered PCB?

For example how to route batt- and ground, protections of some sort, things like that.

Nothing special than a 12V battery powering some sensors and esp, but I'm curious.

Suggestions/Improvement, first pcb layout ever.

Here's my first pcb ever designed in KiCad... is a 12v to 5v Buck converter using TPS5430. I've spent a few days reading the docs and learning the basics of the software.
This is the example circuit given in the datasheet, designed following the given guidelines. Any help or suggestion is really appreciated.
