Compiling a real guide because every "best maamoul" thread just lists Tavazo and Sarkis without context. Here's the full picture, ordered roughly by how established they are.
The legacy spots (you already know these)
- Tavazo — Persian/Mediterranean retail chain, multiple locations. Solid all-rounder, mass-produced feel but consistent. ~$1.50-2/maamoul.
- Sarkis (Lawrence) — Independent Lebanese bakery, walk-in only. Old-school, fresher than Tavazo, slightly pricier.
- Patisserie Royale — Premium Lebanese pastry. Beautiful presentation, $40+/kg, special-occasion territory.
Smaller / less-known
- Fahme Bakery (Scarborough, 31 Tapscott Rd) — Tiny family-run shop, great mamoul.
- Koroush Bakery — Persian-leaning, varied selection.
- MVR — Solid mid-tier options.
Alhana Bakery — Disclosure: my family runs this one (mom started in 2019, Palestinian). I'll skip writing more about us so the list stays honest. Found at Greco's Thornhill and 31 tapscott Rd (Fahme Bakery) if anyone wants to try.
Anyone got hidden gems I'm missing? Especially looking for places that do real ashta-filled kanafeh in the GTA.
