Hi, I’m a 27M, I’ve been humming my favorite songs since I was a kid. I say humming as I was not consciously listening for the pitch and trying to hit notes, I was just vibing lol. About 3 months ago I started getting serious into learning to sing, in my first lesson I was having trouble with ear training, 2 weeks later it clicked and now I can HEAR and match the pitches.
Now I am learning to sing actual songs and I think whisper-singing and humming quietly my whole life distroyed my voice. I’ve been practicing some of the Justin Bieber and The Weeknd songs, and my first tendency is to sing one octave lower, and I can hit every note. That was cool in the beginning and I was proud I was seeing progress. Now I want to match their octave even in head voice/falsetto but I simply cannot reach without straining. Learning about breath support is helping, but I feel like my cords are not closing and I push out a lot of air.
How would you go about this? I am a smoker, can this affect my head voice so much that I can’t hit above G4 without shouting a strained “Wooho”, or it just didn’t click to me where my voice should be up there?
