Hi everyone!
I’m currently planning my very first solo trip, and Kyrgyzstan is at the top of my list. I haven’t booked my flights yet, but I’m looking at the Sept 23rd to Oct 7th window.
I’m a total beginner when it comes to traveling alone, but I’m not looking for a "soft" experience. I want to rent a proper 4x4 (Lexus GX or Land Cruiser) and I’m ready to get my hands dirty. Changing a tire on a mountain pass or driving through tough tracks doesn’t scare me—I actually want that challenge!
However, since it’s my first time solo, I have a few questions:

  1. The Route: I want to "cut" through the mountains. I’m thinking about the Tosor Pass and heading towards Kel-Suu. Is this realistic for a solo driver in late September/early October, or is the snow already too risky?
  2. Accommodation: I’m planning to bivouac/camp as much as possible (I have a -10°C comfort sleeping bag). But given the cold, is it easy to find guesthouses last minute if the weather turns bad?
  3. Travel Buddies: I’d love to meet other people! Are there many travelers left during that period? I’m looking to spend my first night in a hostel in Bishkek (maybe Apple or Tunduk) to find people to convoy with for a few days. Is that common?
  4. 4x4 Rental: Any recommendations for a rental company that allows real off-roading and can help with border zone permits for Kel-Suu?
I’m really hyped about this trip but also want to be smart about it. If anyone is planning to be there around those dates and wants to join forces for a part of the trip, let me know!
Thanks a lot for your help! 🇰🇬
