How to balance Rolling and Roleplaying?
Hey guys, I've posted here around 2 months ago asking for advice on my first story as a ST.
We're now at my second story, the players are having a good time interacting with everything they can (and plotting against many people), and I'm also having a good time storytelling for them.
Now, there was a moment in which a player reached out very respectfully to let me know that his social "build" felt a bit undermined because I have not been asking for many rolls during social encounters, and because we're also not getting into Social Combat so often (Much because I'm still trying to figure out when to use that kind of combat, and a bit afraid to use it).
I've made it clear to him that I'm using the "Taking Half" rule from the Corebook (Check their pool, consider half as successes instead of rolling) to avoid rolling all the time. And I really feel that everyone in the group roleplays really well, so I don't usually ask for social rolls because we're always pretty much just roleplaying our way through it.
Even though we're having a good time, I can't ignore how he felt. So I'd like to ask you:
How do you guys balance that out? When to simply roleplay? When to ask for roll?
I feel like repeatedly asking for rolls would put them in danger of failing to talk simply because of a bad roll, and that it would also slow the game up a bit, but would really like to hear your advice!
