I'm new to fig trees, but not new to fruit trees in general. I was at the local nursery this past weekend, and they were discounting their fruit trees. Among these were several Brown Turkey Fig trees in 3-gallon pots. They didn't have any green growth on them; the branches were brown and dead. The main trunk, when scratched, still showed some green beneath the bark. I picked one up for $10 as a shot in the dark. I started pruning back the dead branches and got all the way back to the main trunk, and even a few inches of the main trunk were dead and cut back.
I'm not familiar with how hardy these plants are, or how far they can go and still come back. Given my description, does it sound like this tree can recover, or should I go out and try to find a healthier tree with obvious signs of life to start growing?
Thanks.
