I am tapering off mirtazapine very slowly and under supervision from my psychiatrist. I was on 45mg, then moved down to 30 mg for three weeks, then moved down to 22.5 mg (half the 45 mg) for three weeks, and now I'm on 15 mg (half the 30 mg). Trying to eventually fully get off it.
But, I've have been having brain zaps terribly. It feels like a quick electric shock in my brain that reverberates down to my toes. Makes me slightly disconcerted for a second or so. Mostly triggered by running and/or working out but also I can force them by darting my eyes quickly from left to right. It's freaking me out as I'm worried it's going to cause me to accidentally hurt myself (like if it lasts longer than a few seconds and I'm running or something, I'm worried I may fall).
My psychiatrist says withdrawal from mirtazapine should not cause brain zaps. But I don't know what else it could be.
Within the last year, I've had a head MRI, CT, and EEG and all came back normal, so I know it doesn't have to do with anything related to that. (I initially got on mirtazapine because I had such bad anxiety about my health that I was going to multiple different doctors and getting multiple unnecessary tests and the MRI, CT, and EEG were part of that spiral).
Did anyone else have brain zaps while tapering off mirtazapine and if so, how long did they last?
