Kindergartens lack of comprehension to questions asked

I have to teach Arts to Kindergartens a few times a week. I struggle with them comprehending basic questions. Every time I ask a question I get random answers no matter how I phrase it. Today we had a milk farmer do a presentation. She asked “What do cows make?”, answers “I like cows!”, “Outside I play ball” She then had to answer for them and asked “What foods are made of milk?”. “Grandma coming to pick me up”, “I like milk”. Only 3 out of the 20 kids are able to answer questions. The presenter was frustrated and I feel bad for her but realize at least it’s not just me. These are 4, 5 and 6 years olds but honestly it’s like teaching to toddlers. The co-teacher says that they aren’t being read to that’s why they lack comprehension. Ok but are parents not speaking to their children?!? Do you not ask, your children questions, “Where do eggs come from?, Where do you think rain comes from?” We’re suppose to teach them to read, but I feel like I’m faced with a brick wall. These kids aren’t ready for Grade 1.
