Vodafone Lying, 2 Years of Hell and now I have a Default on my Credit score - HELP!!!
Sorry, I’ve never posted to Reddit before so apologies for any mistakes!
Cut a very long story short, I had a contract with Vodafone over 2 years ago (ended in 2023, rolling until 2024) that once I had paid off the set contract length, it went into a “monthly rolling” contract sort of deal. Fine! No issues. I however found a much better deal with another company so called up to cancel my direct debits and contract with them, all fine, I was told it was cancelled and they said how I can keep my number by using a “PAC” code which I did (but the codes they sent never worked) so I called again and explained that I no longer wished to keep the number and they again said “no problem, all cancelled”.
Fast forward a year I get sent letters from debt collectors saying I owe over £150 for “unpaid direct debit payments”, I was confused as I was told there was nothing left to pay when I cancelled. I called Vodafone who said “there was no record of me cancelling and no record of any phone calls to them”. Of course at this point I didn’t have the old mobile number so couldn’t prove the time or day I called them.
It went back and forth but eventually got settled and I never had to pay anything and they said they have removed the charged from the account etc.
Fast forward to today (May 2026) I am applying for a mortgage in principle and they couldn’t give me one due to my credit score, I go and look and I see in February this year I had a default added for an unpaid bill to a debt collection agency, for an account unsettled with Vodafone!! The same amount as last year, the account I already dealt with and sorted last year when this exact thing happened.
I called today to be told, yet again, “there is no record of cancelling or any calls so the debt is valid”. I am going round in circles at this point and went through all this stress last year!!!! I will speak direct to the debt collectors tomorrow and see if they can help me, but even if I just pay it because this stress is not worth it for the sake of £150, the default will still be on my credit score and therefore could massively impact my ability to secure a mortgage for something I sorted out over a year ago that should also have never happened in the first place!!!
Any help/ advice/ or what I can do?? Or if anyone else had the same thing happened to them?
Thank you so much in advance.
