(Re)Learning NP3/4.1 photog

Every update the NP3 gets improved and I need to relearn the default settings. These three snaps are on the default settings with the default camera app. They are simply snaps to relearn the idiosyncrasies of the default camera after the update. I always need to relearn to be able to grab the best photos in point and shoot without Expert mode as life happens quickly. The control of the focal in this NP3/4.1 seems better than previously, where the focus could often be "soft."

Diagnostic mode on the CMF watch 3 Pro

This seems to be freeRTOS.

My Chinese isn't great/non-existent.

Has anyone used the DUT mode to connect to any other hardware?

Quick Request: DM me the Games APK

Well, I deleted that app on my CMF1 for the video PSA.

I can't redownload it and I wanted to inspect it with JADX and chatGPT5.

Could someone extract the APK and DM me so I can inspect it.

Many thanks and have a nice weekend.

PSA2: PINNED: Removing bloatware from NOTHING phones

Dear colleagues,

I decided to update the PSA for both NOTHING bloatware apps.

AppServices: serves "recommended" apps.

Settings > Apps > Search "AppServices" > Disable

Games: serves "recommended" games.

Settings > Apps > Search "Games" > Uninstall

u/CMF1_hacker_2 — 5 days ago

Part A - disable it per my post here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NothingTech/comments/1t659co/psa_pinned_video_how_to_disable_new_bloatware_on/

Part B - what is AppServices?

What your APK actually is (from the file you uploaded)

I inspected /mnt/data/AppServices.apk and it is:

  • Package: com.aura.oobe.solutions
  • Version: 9.1.35.0 (versionCode 9013500)
  • Signer certificate (APK v2 signing): O=ironSource Ltd. (self-issued)
    • Cert validity shown as 2021-12-06 → 3021-04-08 (yes, year 3021—typical “long-lived” vendor cert style)

That signer strongly links it to the ironSource / Aura / AppCloud ecosystem that ships as preinstalled OOBE (“out of box experience”) + app-discovery / sponsored app recommendations on various OEM/carrier builds.

Why it shows as a “system app” in All Apps

Because it’s installed on a system partition (or provisioned as privileged/system), Android will list it under Settings → Apps → All apps as a system app, even if you never “installed” it yourself. That’s also why the normal uninstall button often isn’t available.

Permissions it requests (important)

This APK’s manifest includes a pretty powerful set for an “app discovery/OOBE” component, including:

  • INSTALL_PACKAGES
  • QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES
  • RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED
  • DOWNLOAD_WITHOUT_NOTIFICATION
  • WAKE_LOCK
  • FOREGROUND_SERVICE (+ FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE)
  • INTERNETACCESS_NETWORK_STATEACCESS_WIFI_STATE
  • plus a few others like POST_NOTIFICATIONSBIND_JOB_SERVICE, etc.

That combination is consistent with something that can run at boot, talk to servers, and facilitate app installs/recommendations.

Part C - Who is IronSource (from Wiki) and who are you in bed with?

Hi!

I am tired of seeing the same posts and hope this is pinned by the mods.

This is how to disable AppServices on a CMF1 and it is similar on the NOTHING (a) series phones.

This is a quick video. I enable and then disabled AppServices on my CMF1. It should be the same on your phone.

Please, note that some might argue that Nothing Diagnostics and/or Nothing Games is also bloatware. You can use the same method as shown above. You can also simply remove/delete them. I personally like Diagnostics, so I have left it.

Have a nice sunny day :D

As it's the only watch available by CMF or by Nothing, I think it would be okay to offer this here. I'm a very heavy user of the phone. I've had it right from release, or slightly before. I've recorded at least 300 exercises on it, and I can tell you all about the breakdown and how it's improved with updates. I can tell you what it does and doesn't do well. I get about 200 notifications a day, plus use it to record GPS and heart rate for about 2 hours a day. So I'm probably a relatively heavy user and I can answer any questions that you might have about it. Make sure you have a nice weekend.

I have accumulated a ton of bezel wear just through standard usage.

I think the Samsung Watch 3 Pro is going on Flipkart soon. I must be one of the heaviest users of the device. I've recorded like 300 sport activities and I get at least 200 notifications per day. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Have a nice weekend.

There's been a fair amount of discussion about deciding between a Nothing Phone (3) and a Nothing Phone (4a) Pro because they're really similar in price point—less than 10% different in the UK.

I thought I'd take the Nothing Phone (3) and just shoot absolute default in the Nothing camera app and I would just post some photos of my gardening from yesterday, which is a British pastime on bank holiday weekends. I think this is the first decent bloom we've had this year as the temperature has begun to warm up and the sun has come out and the rain has subsided. So, it's nice to see all of the things I took photos of coming back from last year. It's really nice; it's a good time of year in England.

I hope you have a nice long weekend wherever you are, and this was transcribed on Essential Voice.

I didn't expect The Brits to take their garden centers sooooo seriously. Picking up some plants for our Oxford residence. Didn't expect to see this guy wandering around.

So I'm rolling a Nothing Phone (3) and Nothing OS 4.1. I haven't used the car for a long time because the weather's been great so we can use bicycles to get the family around. But for the long bank holiday weekend in the UK, we're going from the seaside residence to the Oxford residence and it's the first time I've fired up Google Maps. It seems that there's now a bubble in the status bar. Isn't this moving towards what everyone wanted when Nothing OS 4 beta rolled out? Everyone wanted a Dynamic Island. Is this kind of going in that direction? Are there any other apps that actually open a little window in the status bar? I'll post a screenshot so you know what I mean. I'm just curious, as there's always this hype and demand for Dynamic Island. Is this the first step towards one? Have a nice long bank holiday weekend.

I still don't know how it works. I don't know what port it's using, and I don't know how the data is transferred from the handset out and back. It seems like I can't use it through eduroam because it's blocked, so I'm using it on 5G or 4G.

I'm curious if it's getting more use now that it's been rolled out to other phones besides the (3), and it's slowing down. I see this sometimes with the CMF Watch 3 Pro; during the day, the Nothing X software is not accessing the server fast enough. That seems to be what's going on here. I'm curious if Nothing has prepaid for so many uses per hour, or if they're getting billed totally, or how it's really going to work.

I'm not a crazy high user, but I'll post my usage patterns below. I think I've used it maybe 70 times. It will be interesting to see how it develops. If it actually slows down, its usefulness is gone.

I found this pen in my desk drawer at work. It feels really nice in the hand and is a very nice ballpoint. I scribbled down my rowing workout to make sure I have 7.5Wmin. This is just to get the right power down. I'm going to be meeting with students the rest of the day and I'll leave it out. Usually about 20% to 30% of the students recognize either the headphones or the phone, and we'll see if they recognize the pen.

There have been a lot of complaints about the new clock face on Nothing OS 4.1 being not centered. Here is a screenshot; it looks totally centered to me. I really don't understand what people are complaining about, or I'm just not seeing something.
