As we rely more on web based programs and less of physical files, we increase our risk of a cyber attack wiping all of our critical information and infrastructure. There’s a big push in a lot of industries to go completely paperless, and while I’ve started moving toward that route, I struggle with the idea of a potential cyber attack or grid failure destroying my business. I own a collision center so my revenue generation is 100% hands on, but it’s the estimating, accounting, and management systems that scare me.
I have limited IT knowledge so I apologize if I have no idea what I’m talking about here. Most of my systems are now web/cloud based. I did switch to a domain setup last year to protect local desktops. I also run ESet web protection, configured Microsoft Entra for security and 2FA on our email, and switch all of my network hardware to Ubiquiti that is lightly monitored by my IT guy. I used to have everything backed up through a server, but the web based applications have made that more or less obsolete. I have good cyber security insurance but that’s more reactive than protective. Every MSP I’ve had quoted so far is ridiculously expensive and not really in the budget.
I’m still terrified of a potential cyber attack and what might happen if someone gets into my files and starts deleting/altering information. What should I do to better protect myself and backup my information?
