Overnight Train - Rome / Pompeii / Sicily
TLDR: what’s the best way to do Rome, Pompeii, and Sicily by train?
I’m flying into Rome on July 20th with my husband and 8 year old daughter. Husband enjoys mythology/history, daughter loves cooking and baking, I am focused on eating, drinking, wandering.
We really want to experience an overnight train (originally looked at Rome to Nice, then Nice to Paris but the Rome to Nice route isn’t running this year). We saw there’s an amazing overnight journey into Sicily where the train boards a ferry for a bit which is so cool!
It’s important to me to see Pompeii and it looks like there’s trains into Naples and Sorrento that would work, and ones that also get down to Sicily from there.
I’m looking for quality of life recommendations on the best way to get from Rome to Pompeii to Sicily. For example, is there a better train line or station because the overnight train is nicer, or is there a great spot to have dinner in Sorrento and so it makes sense to access Pompeii from there instead of Naples. Ideally we’d leave Rome early AM, visit Pompeii for a day, then move on to Sicily. However, if there’s a must do activity in the access town, we’d be open to staying a night.
Help? Suggestions? Thanks!
