Junction box / oven connection mounted in-wall, with access on outside wall -- good idea or just dumb?
We are at the very tail end of a kitchen restoration after a water leak. We got new cabinets and my wife decided she wanted a new double oven too. Unfortunately, the installer that the contractor used to put in the oven had lied about his knowledge and experience. So that first install attempt failed, the oven was damaged and we were left with an empty cabinet and no junction box for the electrical hookup. (photo 1)
We had purchased extended protections for the oven, so we got that replaced. Now for other reasons as well, I no longer trust the contractor and am getting estimates from others to do the electrical and installation. To be to code in CA, I understand that any junction box for bringing power to the oven needs to be accessible. Putting one at the back of this cabinet wouldn't meet that standard, as the oven would prevent access.
So one option we were given is to re-route the feed wire down to the crawl space under the house, install a junction box there and then run a wire up through the back of the oven cabinet to the cabinet above - which has doors - and install the second junction box there. Then drill a hole through the floor of the cabinet above to run the pigtail (photo 2) up to the junction box. Problem is my wife hates the idea of having an electrical box at the rear of the top cabinet and I'd really rather not deal with having an "accessible" junction box in the tight crawl space under the house.
Another guy came by this morning and suggested that instead, we cut through the back of the oven cabinet near the floor and near the top (photo 3). At the bottom, cut through the drywall and carefully through the stucco to the outside. Mount a junction box (photo 4) with the front plate accessible from outside (photo 5) and pull the feed wire into it from the bottom. Near the top of the cabinet, cut or drill through the drywall so that we can drop the pigtail down and pull it into the box from the top to make the connection.
I've measured multiple times and taking into account everything I can think of, we should easily have enough length on the pigtail to reach the box. And of course the box exposed to the outside has a water-proof seal, and the opening in the stucco would have to be sealed well. The box cover plate would also need to be permanently labeled.
So what do you think? Is this a good, workable idea or is it dumb? What else might need to be taken into consideration?
Thanks for the feedback!
