Hi everyone,

I’m starting my first internship this summer working with California Sea Lions and North American River Otters, and I’m really excited (and a little overwhelmed in the best way).

Since this is my first zoo internship, I’d love some advice from those of you who’ve been in the field longer. I want to show up prepared and invest in gear that actually holds up to the job.

A few things I’m especially looking for recommendations on:

Work boots: Waterproof, durable, comfortable for long shifts, and able to handle wet/slippery conditions

Socks: What actually keeps your feet dry/warm through wet exhibits and hose-down days?

Work bag: Something practical for carrying lunch, gloves, notebooks, water bottle, etc. Bonus if it’s easy to clean

Rain gear / waterproof layers: What brands actually last in animal care settings?

Any “wish I had this on day one” items: Open to anything—gear, small tools, accessories, etc.

I’m also open to general advice for starting out in marine mammal or aquatic mammal care—what surprised you most, or what you wish someone had told you early on.

Thanks in advance! Really appreciate any guidance from people already in the field.
