Difference between community college or local university for pre reqs

Hello —

I’m considering a DIY post bacc. I have a community college nearby as well as a four-year university that has a med school (Wayne State) where I could take the pre reqs as well. The CC is half the cost.

I would like to stay local to SE Michigan and apply to Wayne State, Oakland, Michigan (reach, I know), and MSU (DO and MD).

How much of a difference for the schools (besides UofM) would taking my pre reqs at CC make? Do people sometimes split the difference? I suspect my GPA will be much higher if I take chem, physics, etc at CC.

I otherwise have a compelling background - 28F, 34 ACT, went to a top business school and worked on Wall Street and in consulting.

I (28F) am considering a career change after several years in finance and tech. I would love to do something skill-based that can’t be automated, is somewhat rewarding, and doesn’t keep me trapped in a cubicle for the next 30 years.

I know I could handle the rigor of med school but am not sure it really makes sense compared to the flexibility and rising comp of nursing.

Any non-trad students able to weigh in on why they chose med school, besides the compensation difference? I’m not super financially motivated and already funded my retirement and own my home. Would love to see the non-financial pros to being an attending vs nurse

I currently work in tech (business side, not CS) and want to pivot to healthcare. My grandma was in hospice this year and I was very involved in her care and have developed an interest in primary care or gerontology. I used to work at my dad’s dental practice years ago when I was in college, but otherwise don’t have clinical volunteer experience.

I went to a top public undergrad business school (think UVA, Berkeley, UMich) and had a 3.7. I had a 34 on my ACT and can get a strong rec letter from my advisor. Am I cooked without volunteer hours? Should I cram them in this summer? I would love
to go to JHU, BM, Scripps, etc.
