Self-own in Tom Tiffany dam-tender commercial?

In his new (showing in Madison, at least) commercial, Tom Tiffany says that Wisconsin families are under water, that he was a dam-tender for 29 years, and then keeps using the dam metaphor. But, using his own metaphor, wouldn't families be under water because he didn't release water? What kind of dam-tender is he?!

Suggest novels that are third-person omniscient in a sprawling way

I love third-person omniscient novels—like The Known World and Mrs. Dalloway—where the author will spend a paragraph or a page sharing the thoughts and feelings of multiple minor characters who don't impact the plot at all, sometimes even zipping into the future to say what will happen to them. I'm not looking for novels where we only stay in the head of major characters and the plot weaves their lives into a tidy knot—I want the sprawl. What do you recommend?
