euphoria film references

-Wedding episode maddie entrance scene score- tony scott true romance score -true romance in general very LA very hollywood, cassie’s halloween costume s1

-Rue kill bill vol 2 michael madsen character

-rue gun scene jackie brown ak47 scene w samuel jackson

-aesthetically similar to showgirls (makeup, lush and vibrant color scheme)

-Jules apartment /city scape American Psycho adjacent, saran wrapped head in the refrigerator

I copied and pasted that from my notes i’ve been making while watching this season. California/ LA and its more seedy underbelly seem like a character of its own this season, the sweeping desert landscape, the LA influencer Hollywood backlots elements, the music choices (which i feel are a little unfairly maligned tbh, especially rewatching s2 which lifts scores from other movies that are very lush and cinematic in tone).

The scenes in Jule’s apartment, the static city background in the windows, the very minimal, almost clinical set dressing, and now the saran wrap scene with an unnerving sugar daddy, reads American Psycho-esque for me. maybe a reach, but thematically american psycho’s focus on money, materialism, and social hierarchy maybe tie in a bit with Jule’s story a bit, but really that might be a reach.

Showgirls seems to have had a very heavy influence on the makeup this season (Maddie pool scene, the girls at alamo’s club).

I think all the Tarantino comments are very apt, especially the parallels with Rue’s character and Michael Madsen’s character in Kill Bill vol. 2, right down to scrubbing toilets at the strip club. Hired help in a seedy desert club.

True Romance seems to have a special place for Sam Levinson, Cassie’s s1 halloween costume, it’s another movie where LA feels like its own character. Maddie’s wedding entrance score felt VERY True Romance, which is also scored by Hans Zimmer. Maddie’s story so far has been her trying to make her own path in Hollywood so, again, to me, that made sense thematically.

I’m sure i’m missing a bunch of other references, or just seeing similarities that might not be there, but i think it’s been kind of fun to watch this season as a love note to film, for all its over the top theatrics and highly stylized aesthetic.
